The AARC is a non-profit organization of people who share a common interest in the hobby of amateur radio, community service, and emergency communications.
December 2017 Meeting and Announcements
AARC will have its Christmas dinner on Wednesday Dec. 6, 2017 at Philay’s Catfish N’ More, 13386 Airline Hwy Ste A, Gonzales, Louisiana 70737, at 1830hrs. There will be no business meeting this month but there is plenty to talk about. Come by, bring your family or friends and enjoy good food and company.
Darlene and Al announced at the November meeting that they will not seek reelection to the offices of President and Treasurer. Now is the time to toss your hat in the ring and take an officer position and help lead the club. We need to hold elections in January and that means that we need you to nominate someone, even yourself if you feel you can hold the office, and guide the club into the new year.
AARC will again be assisting the JFA with the Gonzales Christmas parade staging. If you would like to volunteer, please report to EA High School by 0930hrs Sunday, December 10. Bring a handheld if you have one. Lunch will be provided.
The K5ARC website is back online thanks to the efforts of David Leblanc, N5LEB. After experimenting with a couple of different styles, David set up the website in a WordPress format to allow easy updates and announcements. Right now it is pretty bare bones but we will adding more to it in the coming weeks. Visit the website at http://k5arc.org/ .
It’s almost the end of the year and that means time for club dues. A membership is only $25 annually and really helps our small club purchase items it needs to keep repeaters on the air and to keep the club operating. To pay your dues you can visit the club website at http://k5arc.org/ and click on the PayPal button which allows you to pay via a credit or debit card or a PayPal account if you have one.
If you missed the November club meeting you can find it on the video sharing site Vidme at https://vid.me/j31JK . I set up a page on Vidme for the club at the beginning of 2017. Before that I had been posting the club videos to my personal YouTube page and wanted to separate the club videos from my own. While many disgruntled YouTubers made the jump over to Vidme, the site was just not able to compete against the Google giant of video sharing. This week Vidme announced that it will shut down on Dec 15. So I will be setting up a YouTube channel for the Ascension ARC in the coming days and post the past meeting videos, as well as future meeting videos, on the new channel.
The 147.225 repeater is still down pending repairs. So are our UHF and APRS repeaters. We hope to have them all up and running in the coming weeks. Please continue to monitor and use the 145.310 repeater as well as our 146.985 repeater.
The K5ARC VE Team is looking to reform. In years past we tested under the W5YI VEC but have not done so in quite a while. We are looking at other options and trying to find club members who hold Extra licenses so that we can host VE test sessions for people interested in getting licensed. If you are an Extra and are willing to serve on our VE Test Team please let us know. Currently our only options are to point people to other clubs such as Jefferson ARC, SELARC and BRARC to test.
Hammond Hamfest 2018 sponsored by SELARC will be at the SLU Pennington Center on Saturday, January 20, 2018. The 37th annual hamfest will be the same as last year (and still FREE admission and FREE parking!) at 1350 North General Pershing Street in Hammond. From I-55 take Exit 32 and go east on University Avenue 1.5 miles to North General Pershing.
Happy Holidays and 73
